Total rubbish of a law

According to the Private Higher Educational Institutions Act of 1996 (Act 555) a person, while he is a student of a private higher educational institution cannot become a member of, or in any manner associate with, any political party, trade union, society, association, organization, body or group, unless allowed by the Registrar General. It doesn’t matter if it is established under any law or not and whether it is within or outside Malaysia.

Three simple words ladies and gentlemen. Only in Malaysia! Apparently, our glorious country is the only one in the world that has this law. Don’t you find it utterly ridiculous that a democratic nation doesn’t allow its higher education students, which is basically university students, in any way get involved with any political party? Democracy is all about having the right to choose or form our own opinions and prefences. How is it possible that a law like that exist within a so called democratic society?

It is stressed how they youth of this nation should shape up and start acting like the future leaders of Malaysia. We should read more then just the news and education section of the newspaper. Instead of just fashion and entertainment magazines, we should also read print materials like the Times. We should increase our knowledge or social and political situations happening around the world. Well let us at least have the chance to learn and experience political and social events and issues within our own country.

When the government controls almost every media institution in the country, the youth will definitely turn to political parties, such as DAP, Keadilan and PAS, and politically driven NGO’s such as ‘Bersih’ and ‘PROTES’ for an alternative point of view. Especially since it blatantly obvious that the government controlled media is so biased it can be considered humorous as to how stupid they think the Malaysian people are.

It is sad to see other countries giving their youth the chance to involve themselves politically. American politicians take big care to make sure they don’t leave out the youths in their conquest to gain votes as they know youths represent a big number of the percentage. Closer to home, an Indonesian city came to a standstill because its youths protested on the streets.

The government should also explain how come the students who are caught and prosecuted are always opposition party supporters. For proof please refer to the two University Sains Malaysia (USM) students who were assisting opposition political party DAP in a ‘ceramah.’ They were caught and prosecuted under this law. Until now have not been able to graduate from their course. While recently the News Straits Time has a story, with a picture, on two Malay Communiy College girls who are unable to vote due to being underage but are still helping out at their local ‘bilik gerakan’ of a BN political party.

Never has there been a case where a youth has been prosecuted for assisting or being involved with a ‘Barisan National’ (BN) political party and please do not even try to say that the BN does not have students helping them out.

Another issue at hand is the legal voting age in Malaysia. Almost every other democratic nation in the world allows their youth to vote at the age of 18. It is also the age where they are allowed to get their driving license, legally drink and involve themselves in sexual intercourse.

In Malaysia, we can drive at 18. We can legally get drunk at 18. Heck we can have sex with whoever we want at 18. However we can only vote at the age of 21. Come on! If the government trusts us enough to drink and drive and have sex, why can’t we vote? Somebody please explain the logic behind that law.

These laws should be abolished or changed. Enough said. The youth of Malaysia want the chance to be able to participate with politics in what ever way without having to look over their shoulder and worry if they’re going to be able to graduate if they are caught. We shouldn’t be deprived of our democratic rights so early in our lives. It defeats the purpose of a democratic state.

You want us to start behaving and working towards being the future leaders of tomorrow? Well then start giving us more chances to do so.

heyy! finally I'm here.

and that's probably the most ridiculous law I've heard of after the one in my high school which forbids girls to wear stud earrings more than 3 cm.

btw, I'll throw you a party if NST or Star actually dares to publish that ;)

Yep, which is why I'm wondering about that law you mentioned. This is a society that claims to "unite" Malaysians in Dublin, yet behind that thin veil it is definitely a political society championing (what else) UMNO. Indirectly perhaps, but it is definitely an UMNO society.

Check it out yourself: http://ruzaimiramza.wordpress.com/2008/03/06/2010-docs-get-paid-higher-now-future-docs-in-ireland-shut-up-and-stop-saying-bad-things-about-the-government/
That's the blog of the KUD president, who periodically sends nonsense like this to our inboxes. See how he thinly veils his political sentiments over the overall feel of the post?

Today, just today, in the aftermath of Saturday's "political tsunami" lol I get this email:
